Camila Nebbia's Large Ensemble
“the darkness overwhelming and imposing, compelled me to light my own fires” is an audiovisual performance for large ensemble featuring Camila Nebbia’s compositions and films. The project is inspired by her great-grandfather’s memoir about leaving Lebanon and migrating to Argentina, as well as his experiences of despair, longing, and hope. Nebbia connected these themes to her first years in Europe, particularly through recurring dreams she experienced, and created the music alongside Super 8 and 16mm films, drawing from these dreams and family archives.
The through-composed music navigates intensely through diverse passages of contemporary atonal material and improvised music. The interactive films are expanded Super 8 and 16mm works, hand-painted using transparent film and archival material from Nebbia’s own films and family archives. The project will be premiere at the Jazzfest Berlin in October 30th.
